Profile

Scottish artist Rebecca studied at Duncan of Jordanstone Art School in Dundee and graduated in 2004 with a BA (Hons) in Animation and Electronic Media. Shortly after graduating, her 2-minute animation ‘Elemental’ was selected and screened at the prestigious Bradford Animation Festival.

Since completing her studies at University, Rebecca worked for 6 months in a Special Effects studio in Glasgow, working with sculptured props, maquettes and various prosthetic appliances for both film and television production.

Since returning to her home in Lochgilphead on the west coast of Argyll, Rebecca has worked on a variety of freelance works and commissions, as well as being employed as a Graphic Artist for 2 years.

More recently, Rebecca has established her own arts business and is now working full time as a self-employed artist. She has participated in a BBC news article broadcast nationally, which featured work she had undertaken and successfully sold at an RGI show held in the Crinan Hotel. Also, featuring on the BBC Radio 4 Corryvreckan programme, Rebecca was interviewed regarding her commission based illustration work for the informative Whirlpool Scotland website.

Rebecca continues to paint, draw and design as part of her new business ‘R-Barnett-Arts’ and exhibits regularly around Scotland. Her main influence within her artwork is mythical legends, folklore and superstition surrounding the sea. Living and working in Mid-Argyll, this is an ideal environment to develop the themes surrounding her work.

“I use mainly water-based mediums, finding this lends itself well to my style, usually, I’ll let the ink or water on the page tell the story of what I am about to paint. I find things within the behavior of the medium that can sometimes yield surprising results. I like to think that by letting the inks and water on my canvas make their own marks, that I am using happy mistakes and serendipity to develop the piece. No two pieces will ever be the same.”

“I also enjoy utilizing some of my work digitally. The skills I have learnt as an animator have informed a sense of three dimension and movement to my artwork. Through this, I have also been able to develop the graphic design side of my business, crating leaflets, flyers, labels, invites etc for various different clients”
